Products You Might Not Know Contain Corn

We live in Indiana and it seems like we can’t drive 10 minutes in any direction without seeing a corn field.  It is the backbone of agriculture in this state and it is not a convenient place to have a corn allergy/sensitivity, let me tell you.

As prolific as it is in the Hoosier State, there is something else that makes avoiding corn so difficult (no matter where you live).  It is not just blowing it’s pollen in the air.  It is hiding in our foods, medicines, make-ups and cleaning products.  And the corn industry has been allowed to create hundreds of different names to conceal corn products, so that if you have a corn allergy or sensitivity, you literally have to become a detective to determine if you are ingesting the golden menace.

Below is a list of things to stay away from, if you are staying away from corn:

Ascorbic Acid, Baking Powder, Brown Sugar (caramel coloring), Calcium Citrate, Cellulose, Citrate, Citric Acid, Decyl Glucoside, Dextrin and Maltodextrin, Dextrose, hospital IVs, can be added to Novacaine, Ethanol, Ferrous Gluconate (in canned olives), Artificial and Natural Flavorings, Golden Syrup, Honey (HFCS is sometimes fed to bees resulting in corn in the honey produced), Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP), Iodized Salt, Lactic Acid, Lauryl Glucoside (used in make-up), Magnesium Citrate and Stearate, Malic Acid, Malt and Malt Flavoring, Maltitol, Mannitol, Methyl Gluceth (used in make-up), Modified Food Starch, MSG, Polydextrose, Polylactic Acid (PLA, used for plastic), Potassium Citrate, Polysorbates, Powdered Sugar, Saccharin, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Erthorbate (can come from corn.  Used in meats, poultry and soft drinks), Sodium Starch Glycolate, Sorbitan, Sorbitol, Starch, Sucralose, Sweet’N Low, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Vanilla Extract, White Vinegar, Vitamin C and Vitamin E, Xanthan Gum, Xylitol, Zein (used in medicines).

I know!  That wipes out pretty much all processed foods, diet foods, medicines.  Baking is even more of a challenge and good luck finding cosmetics and body care products free of these goodies. And no toothpaste either!  This list is long but wait, folks!  There’s more!

According to an article from Gunaxin, and to even complicate things further for you, here is an overview of more things made from corn:

  1.  Protective Sealing Bands–(like on an oatmeal tube) When simple sugar from corn is extracted and separated, its starchy compounds can be used to make plastic-like products.
  2. Gypsum Drywall–No, no one is going to take a bite out of drywall, but what about home remodeling projects or walking through a new house being built?  Breathing in that dust isn’t going to go well for those with corn issues.
  3. Varnish–again, we aren’t drinking this product, but if anyone has been around varnish smell, it is potent and the corn in this product can still affect you when inhaled.
  4. Glue on envelopes and stamps.
  5. Coating on pills
  6. Diapers–The moisture absorbing materials in diapers and I have even been told many diapers have corn starch on the diapers to keep little bottoms from sticking.
  7. Coated paper products–like paper plates, parchment, cups, milk or ice cream cartons, toilet paper.
  8. Laundry Starch
  9. Wax or shellac on apples (also carnauba wax). Wax is used on avocados as well.
  10.  Organic pesticides can contain corn.
  11. Almonds–the prep to get these ready to sell may use corn-based products.
  12. Most fruits are gassed with ethylene to ripen them and this comes from corn.
  13. BPA lining of cans can come from corn.
  14. Meats that aren’t grass fed.

The list is literally endless. has done the most extensive research on corn containing products, so if you have a corn allergy or even an intolerance, she would be a wonderful resource.

As I have said in other blog posts, corn has to be, in my opinion, the most difficult of all foods to avoid.  It is cheap and versatile and can be used for virtually everything under the sun.  I joke about how the corn farmers of America are secretly trying to take over the world.  Well, if they aren’t planning to take over the world, they are at least getting filthy, stinkin’ rich!  From running our cars to wiping our tushies to filling our bellies, corn is everywhere! This cold, hard fact makes this planet are pretty tough place to live on for peeps who have to avoid corn:(
